Semi-Private vs 1-on-1 Personal Training in Hamilton, ON

Xelf Fitness Coaching Team

The Two Formats, Side By Side

Once you have found a fitness studio in Hamilton, ON that actually fits how you like to train, the next question is usually which format to choose: semi-private training or 1-on-1 personal training. Both are coached, both are built around your goals, and neither one drops you into a crowded class. The difference comes down to how much one-on-one attention you want and how you like to train.

  • Semi-private: small groups coached at a maximum ratio of four to one (three to one for customized semi-private)
  • 1-on-1 personal training: a coach working with only you, available from 6:00am to 8:00pm depending on trainer
  • Both formats: one-hour sessions, a plan built around your goals, no crowded classes

When Semi-Private Training Wins

Semi-private training is a strong fit if you like having other people in the room without losing the coaching. A small group, capped at a four-to-one ratio, still means a coach is watching you closely every session — you are just sharing the hour with a couple of other people working toward their own goals. It also tends to build accountability naturally: showing up matters a little more when someone else expects to see you there.

If you want an even smaller group with more individual coaching inside the semi-private format, our customized semi-private option runs at a three-to-one ratio instead.

When 1-on-1 Personal Training Wins

1-on-1 personal training makes sense when your plan needs to be built entirely around you: a specific injury you are working around, a schedule that only works at an unusual hour, or simply wanting every minute of the session focused on your goals with nobody else in the room. Because 1-on-1 sessions run between 6:00am and 8:00pm depending on trainer availability, it also tends to offer more flexibility for an unpredictable schedule.

Cost, Attention And Pace

As a general rule, semi-private training costs less per session than 1-on-1, because you are sharing the coach's attention with one or two other people. 1-on-1 costs more per session in exchange for full, individual attention for the entire hour. Neither format sacrifices coaching quality — the trade-off is purely between shared attention at a lower per-session cost and full individual attention at a higher one.

Neither format is “better.” The better format is the one you will actually keep showing up to.

How To Choose Without Guessing

You do not have to figure this out alone. Book a free info session and tell a coach what your schedule looks like, what you are hoping to get out of training, and whether you like company or prefer to train solo. They will point you toward whichever format actually fits, not whichever one is easier to sell.

And if you are still figuring out where to start at all rather than which format to pick, our companion piece, How to Start Strength Training in Hamilton, ON When You've Never Lifted Before, is the better place to begin.
